REACH SVHC evaluation
If you need to identify whether any of the SVHC (Substances of very high concern, as defined under REACH) are contained in an article or in a chemical mixture then you are having two possible ways to follow:
STEP 1
Theoretical assessment, based on information from your supplier:
Does the supplier communicate the presence or not of any SVHC in the product?
If not: is there any likelihood of presence of SVHC taking into account:
- The materials used
- The manufacturing procedures applied
- The suppliers involved
- If the presence of candidate substances is confirmed or must be suspected:
- Will the limit of 0,1 mass% of each SVHC be exceeded?
- Is there a ban of that SVHC in chemical mixtures or for manufacturing process?
If answering all these questions excludes any SVHC then the process can be stopped here.
STEP 2
If information from step 1 results in unclear situation, testing may be needed.
This can be the case if no information is available, e.g. if the supllier does not reply, of if there are doubts on reliability of existing information.
A test is performed for identification and quantification of any SVHC in the product or in the chemical mixture. The test program will be different per material (e.g. plastic, glass, wood, metal, ...), based on general knowledge on which SVHC could be part of which basic material. Not always it will be necessary to identify all SVHC from the list.
A quantitative test can deliver the information of whether the limit of 0.1 mass% per SVHC in the article is respected.
